The details

What condition 8501 requires
  1. Cover for the whole stay.

The cover must be held and maintained for the entire period you are in Australia on the visa, not only at grant.

  2. Family is included.

Partners and children holding a dependent 482 visa carry the same condition and need cover too.

  3. Evidence at lodgement.

Insurers issue a visa verification letter. It is normally taken out before the 482 application is lodged.

From a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement country?

Australia has reciprocal agreements with 11 countries. Medicare can satisfy condition 8501 once you enrol — but enrolment only happens after you arrive, so cover is still needed for the gap between arrival and enrolment. Check your own grant letter or VEVO for the conditions on your visa.
